In the second part of the video series from Lowe's Shop Class, you will learn how to build the bottom shelf and the top of the entertaining cart. Find project details here: http://low.es/1Nj5MSC The bottom shelf of the cart is made of two base rails, two cleats, 13 slats, and two pieces of aluminum edging. Cut your slats, rails and cleats to length on the miter saw. The cleats and rails need pocket holes drilled into them. The tops of the slats sit flush with the tops of the end rails. Offset the cleats by the thickness of a slat by building your bottom shelf upside down, using the slats as spacers. Put the cleat on top and align it with the end rail. Put glue on the ends of the cleats and attach them to the end rails with pocket screws. There are 13 slats, each of which is attached to the cleats using four screws. Start by countersinking two holes in each end of each slat. Using a 5/16 drill bit as a spacer. Using the existing holes, drill pilot holes into the cleats. Use regular screws first to attach the slats. Later, remove each one and replace it with a stainless steel screw. This way you can avoid stripping the soft stainless steel screw heads. Stainless steel screws also work better for outdoor furniture. For the top, there are two sections. The first has supports for the tiles and the second is a divider section to hold tall bottles. There three tile supports, five bottle dividers, and three rails. Start by cutting all of those on the miter saw. Start by assembling the bottle divider first. Take the two rails and put the bottle dividers in between. Use a piece of scrap to create a half inch gap between the dividers and the top. Mark the divider positions, glue the ends, clamp, and attach with pocket screws. Use the same piece of scrap to space the tile supports. Mark the support positions, glue the ends, clamp and attach with pocket screws. For the aluminum rails, first start by measuring the rails and cutting the aluminum to length on the miter saw. Always wear gloves when handling aluminum, in addition to eye and ear protection. Put a piece of wood inside your edging to keep it from bending. Drill a series of holes in the aluminum and position it into place. Then, using a self centering bit, drill pilot holes. Attach all the edging with screws.
